Earlier this year, Vitalik Buterin acknowledged the original L2 roadmap "no longer makes sense" as rollups decentralized more slowly than expected and L1 itself became more capable.
Settlement, not execution: Ethereum's reset
Rather than chase Solana on raw speed, a growing camp of Ethereum builders is reframing the chain's role. Matthieu Saint Olive, a staff product manager at MetaMask, pushed back on the competitive framing: "I'd push back gently on the premise that it's a competition in the first place." Under this view, Ethereum's value is in being the deepest pool of collateral, stablecoins and liquid assets that every trading venue, including non-Ethereum ones, ultimately settles against. If that thesis holds, the next leg of the perps boom could leave the bulk of trading fees on L2s and app-chains while quietly thickening the demand for ETH-denominated collateral at the base.
