Why India is the target
The pricing is the sharpest part of the story. Avataar plans to charge ₹0.48, or about half a cent, per second of video on its hosted service. TechCrunch notes that competing tools such as Veo, Kling, Luma, and Runway often charge $0.10 or more per second.
Peak XV managing director Rajan Anandan said video is especially important in India because consumer internet products there are often video-led rather than text-led, and cost is a major barrier to broad adoption.
Distribution and strategy
Varya will be released as an open-weight model on the government’s AI Kosh portal, along with its training data. That means developers can self-host it or modify it for their own use. Avataar also plans enterprise access and says it is open to partnerships with tools such as Higgsfield and Adobe Firefly.
